International Students

Principles of Corporate Finance

The course Principles of Corporate Finance is held exclusively for international students every winter term. The language of instruction is English.

The aim of the course is to prepare international students to capital markets theory. In particular, the course will highlight bond valuation, stock valuation, risk valuation, and estimation of costs of capital. The topics covered in the course include a special focus on the German capital market: bond trading, stock trading, exchanges in Germany.

Students should have a copy of the first 10 chapters of Berk/DeMarzo's "Corporate Finance" textbook, on which the course will be based. The course will start with Chapter 6, the first five chapters are prerequisite. There are enough textbooks available at the library of the university. Participants should bring a copy of the text to the lectures. Downloads of lecture slides are available at our website.

The grading is based on a written exam and student presentations.

The course is exclusively aimed at international students and limited to max. 12 participants.

Entscheidungslehre (Decision Theory)

The course "Entscheidungslehre" is held every summer term for bachelor-level students. It is based on a weekly 2-hour lecture and is therefore granted with 4 ECTS. The language of instruction is German.

The course deals with structuring decision problems and formulating rationality demands to decision makers. Hereby it tries to create a general decision-making concept which contains the classic decision-theory principles. The aim of the subject is to connect to the other business and economic core modules which are analyzing dynamic and individual decisions within the context of risk, as well as game theory. Further, students of the subject should be able to analyze and structure decision problems by themselves. The course requires basic knowledge in mathematics and statistics.

The course includes the following issues:
principles of decision theory, decisions under certainty, decisions under uncertainty, decisions under risk, decisions with changing information, introduction to game theory, decisions of committees, dynamic decisions

Investitionsentscheidungen (Investment Decisions)

The course Investment Decisions is held every summer term for bachelor-level students. It is based on a weekly 2-hour lecture and is granted with 6 ECTS. The language of instruction is German.

The course deals with principles of investing, in particular rational decisions under risk and uncertainty. Hereby it tries to create a general decision-making concept which contains the classic decision-theory principles. Further, students of the subject should be able to analyze investment decisions and their according impact on the financial performance of firms. The course requires basic knowledge in mathematics and statistics.

Kapitalmarktmanagement (Capital Market Management)

The course "Kapitalmarktmanagement" is held every winter term for bachelor-level students. It consists of a weekly 2-hour lecture and a weekly 2-hour tutorial, and is therefore granted with 6 ECTS. The language of instruction is German.

The course focuses on the financial theory and empirical evidence that are useful for developing an in-depth understanding of capital markets and for making sound investment decisions. The course helps students to develop strong quantitative skills in modern finance and empirical knowledge.

The course covers the following main topics:

  • Portfolio Theory and Practice

  • Risk Measurement and Management

  • Asset Pricing Models and Empirical Evidence on Security Returns

  • Portfolio Performance Evaluation

  • Options and Futures

Winter Term Lecture and Tutorial Taught in German 4 Hours per Week 6 ECTS

Finanzmanagement (Financial Management)

The course "Finanzmanagement" is held every summer term for master-level students. It consists of a weekly 2-hour lecture and a weekly 2-hour tutorial, and is therefore granted with 6 ECTS. The language of instruction is German.

The course focuses on financial management from the perspective of the firm’s management. The main goal of this course is to develop a strong foundation of advanced financial management concepts, which can be used to help firms maximize their shareholder value.

The course covers the following main topics:

  • Shareholder Value Management and Financial Analysis

  • Financial Planning and Working Capital Management

  • Principal-Agent Theory and Sources of Financing

  • Financial Markets and Security Analysis

  • Behavioral Finance
