Mittelmeerbeziehungen aus der Sicht von See- und Landkarten (14.-17. Jh.)

Entgegen den Vorstellungen unter Kartographiehistoriker*innen des Mittelalters und der frühen Neuzeit war das Mittelmeer vom 14. bis 17. Jahrhundert keineswegs durch vorrangig feindliche Beziehungen geprägt. Entgegen den Vorstellungen von Wissenschaftshistoriker*innen des Mittelalters endeten die intellektuellen Austauschbeziehungen quer über das Mittelmeer nicht im späten 13. Jahrhundert, sondern setzten sich bis in die Gegenwart fort. In meiner Vorlesung werde ich einen Teil dieser Austauschbeziehungen vorstellen, die sich in See- und Landkarten widerspiegeln, die in Werkstätten in vielen unterschiedlichen Städten entlang des Mittelmeers angefertigt worden sind.

In contrast to what historians of the cartography of the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period have argued, the Mediterranean between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries was not in fact marked primarily by hostile relations. And in contrast to what historians of science working on the Middle Ages tend to claim, it was not the case the intellectual exchanges across the Mediterranean came to an end in the late thirteenth century. Rather, they continued into the present. In this lecture, we will present selected aspects of such exchanges and encounters in the context of their representations in sea and land maps that were produced in workshops in various cities along the Mediterranean coast.
